<emph render="italic">Norge</emph> was an airship that flew the first verified trip to the North Pole on May 12, 1926; it is also the first aircraft to fly over the polar ice cap between Europe and America. Designed by Umberto Nobile of Italy, the expedition over the North Pole was proposed by Roald Amundsen, Nobile, and Lincoln Ellsworth, and funded by the Aero Club of Norway.</p>
<p>Known as the Amundsen-Ellsworth 1926 Transpolar Flight, the expedition took off from Rome, Italy on April 10, and arrived in England later that same day; they then left for Oslo, Norway on April 12. On April 15, the ship left Oslo for Gatchina, Russia, where the expedition then paused until May 5 due both to weather and the mooring mast at its next stop in Norway having not been finished yet. On May 11, the expedition left Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway, and flew to the North Pole, where the passengers dropped flags from Norway, America, and Italy down to the ice.</p>
<p>After reaching the North Pole, the crew then flew to Teller, Alaska, where they landed due to weather. From there, the
<emph render="italic">Norge</emph> was dissassembled and shipped back to Italy.</p>
