                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph> during Operation Highjump (1946-1947). The Jack Moon Papers date from 1947 January 12 to February 26, and consist of items gathered by Moon during his naval service onboard the United States Ship 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph> during Operation Highjump (1946-1947). Items include Official United States Navy Dispatches from 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph>, and several issues of "The Pine Knot," the 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph>'s shipboard newsletter.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Jack Moon was a member of the United States Navy who served on the United States Ship 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph> during Operation Highjump (1946-1947). At that time, he was an enlisted man with a rank of Seaman First Class. Following Operation Highjump, he was temporarily transferred to the Naval School at Treasure Island in San Francisco, California for electronics technician and maintenance training. Moon returned to service on the 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island </emph>following graduation. It is unknown what Moon did following his time on the 
                <emph render="italic"> Pine Island</emph>.</p>
            <p>The U.S.S.
                <emph render="italic"> Pine Island</emph> was a seaplane tender built in 1942, and the only ship of its name in the United States Navy. After service in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, 
                <emph render="italic"> Pine Island</emph> sailed to Antarctica as part of Operation Highjump. It carried a helicopter and several seaplanes, which were used for aerial exploration. 
                <emph render="italic"> Pine Island</emph> was also instrumental in rescuing crew members from the downed aircraft 
                <emph render="italic">George 1</emph> that crashed on Thurston Island, Antarctica on December 30, 1946; the crew were not rescued until January 12, 1947.</p>

            <p>The Jack Moon Papers date from 1947 January 12 to February 26, and consist of items gathered by Moon during his naval service onboard the United States Ship 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph> during Operation Highjump (1946-1947). Items include Official United States Navy Dispatches from 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph>, and several issues of "The Pine Knot," the 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph>'s shipboard newsletter. Items document the time period immediately following the 
                <emph render="italic">Pine Island</emph>'s rescue of the crew of downed airplane 
                <emph render="italic">George 1</emph> on January 12, 1947.</p>
