Mendenhall Glacier is located 12 miles from Juneau, Alaska. This glacier is a popular tourist attraction because it is the only glacier in Southeast Alaska that is accessible by road. The glacier retreats every year due to rising average temperatures; it is monitored by the Juneau Icefield Research Program. Mount Rainier is a active volcano located in Washington. It is 14,410 feet above sea level and has a glaciated peak. Mount Rainier National Park is a popular tourist attraction, with many visitors attempting to summit the mountain.

Guy Weyer Miller (1892-1985) and Jeannette Bonar Miller (1895-1985) met when they were students at The Ohio State University in 1919 and they were married in 1920. The Millers travelled to Alaska in August 1962. During a stop in Washington, the Millers photographed Mount Rainier.

There are 11 slides of Mendenhall Glacier and 12 slides of Mount Rainier. Two USB flash drives, dated 2016, contain scanned images of the original slides. The images of Mendenhall Glacier depict close up shots of the glacier, the visitor's center, the surrounding landscape and plants, and a faraway image of Jeannette Miller. The images of Mount Rainier depict the mountain and one of its lakes, two photographs of Guy and Jeannette Miller with the mountain in the background, and a aerial view of the mountain.
