Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr. was one of a handful of polar explorers in the first half of the twentieth century who brought public attention to the icy continent of Antarctica; he and others on his expeditions established permanent bases for the United States in Antarctica, conducted scientific research, and explored Antarctica. Admiral Byrd himself led seven expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctic regions of the globe. There was extensive media coverage of Byrd and other explorers in the polar regions in the first half of the twentieth century, which led to large amounts of public interest in their activities and an increase of scientific research conducted there.
