<p>The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition took place from 1914 to 1917; it was led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, and was an unsuccessful attempt to make the first land crossing of Antarctica. One of the ships of the expedition, the
<emph render="italic">Endurance</emph>, became trapped in the ice and sank, stranding 28 men on an ice floe with three life boats. After the ice floe broke up, the crew sailed to Elephant Island. From there, six members of the crew including Shackleton made an 800-mile journey in one of the life boats to South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean; from there, rescuers returned to pick up the remaining 22 men.</p>
<p>James Francis "Frank" Hurley (1885-1962) was an Australian photographer and cinematographer of documentary films who was hired as the official photographer on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. He was hired on the condition that he would also record events of the trip on film; this documentary silent film was released as "In the Grip of the Polar Pack Ice" in 1919.</p>
            <p>Leonard D. A. Hussey (1891-1964) was a meteorologist with the

<emph render="italic">Endurance</emph> despite his instructions that each man could only take 2 pounds of personal items; the banjo weighed 12 pounds.</p>

<p>The Reprint of Leonard Hussey and Dogs Photograph Taken by Frank Hurley During the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, with Inscription by Charles J. Green consists of a black and white photograph reprint of an image by Hurley of Hussey holding a large dog named Samson with another dog named Pudge looking on; this reprint was produced in the 1960s. The photograph was originally taken between 1914 and 1917 during Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Hussey was the smallest member of the expedition; Samson was the largest dog, and weighed 30 pounds more than Hussey at the time. The photograph is in an enclosure with the inscription "Kind Regards from CJ Green, Antarctic Expeditions 1914-1916 Endurance, 1921-1922 Quest," and also lists Hussey's, Samson's, and Pudge's weights in stones.</p>
