Biographical Note

Jack C. Zahn (1932-2015) graduated from Ohio State University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology and a Master of Science in Geology with a speciality in geophysics in 1965. From 1962 to 1965, Zahn was employed as a consultant geophysicist with George H. Mayhew and Associates in Powell, Ohio. Zahn also worked for Ohio State University from 1963 to 1965 in the Engineering Experiment Station. He conducted research on the evaluation of geophysical tools and techniques used to solve engineering problems.

Zahn participated in the McMurdo to South Pole American expedition from 1960 to 1961 with the United States Antarctic Research Program. He and the team made measurements of the surface elevation, ice thickness, and magnetic fields. Other tasks assigned during the expedition included taking gravity readings, logging surface characteristics and making surface meteorological observations.

The South Pole Traverse is a 995-mile-long route over snow and ice in Antarctica that links McMurdo Station on the coast to the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. The route was created by compacting snow and filling in crevasses.
