            <abstract id="ref20" label="Abstract">Daniel Talpas was a crew member on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea during the Operation Highjump expedition in 1946-1947, where he served as a reporter for the ship's daily newspaper ("Penguin Special"). The Daniel Talpas Papers contains materials collected by Talpas before, during, and after his time aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea, including a numbered photograph set, newsletters, general commemorative items available to the crew (stationary, matchbooks, publications), and items specific to Talpas, including his Ancient Order of the Deep summons and certificate, and photographs he personally took. Materials date primarily from the time immediately before, during, and after the expedition in 1946-1947, and one article about Admiral Byrd and Operation Highjump dates from 1954.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Daniel Talpas was a crew member on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea during the Operation Highjump expedition in 1946-1947, where he served as a reporter for the ship's daily newspaper ("Penguin Special"). Talpas was a "plank owner" of the Philippine Sea, having been a member of the crew upon commissioning of the ship.</p>
            <p>Operation Highjump (also known as The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946-1947 and Task Force 68) was organized by Admiral Richard E. Byrd for the purposes of establashing the research base Little America IV in Antarctica. The U.S.S. Philippine Sea was the flagship for Operation Highjump.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Daniel Talpas Papers contains materials collected by Talpas before, during, and after his time aboard the U.S.S. Philippine Sea, including a numbered photograph set of the Operation Highjump expedition, and nearly complete runs of the newsletters produced by the ship's crew, including the "Philippine Sea Line" and "Penguin Special." The collection contains general commemorative items available to the crew (stationary, matchbooks, publications), as well as items specific to Talpas, including his Ancient Order of the Deep summons and certificate, and photographs he personally took. The collection also includes Talpas' Plank Owner certificate for the U.S.S. Philippine Sea, as well as a few articles from magazines about the ship and Operation Highjump. Materials date primarily from the time immediately before, during, and after the expedition in 1946-1947, and one article about Admiral Byrd and Operation Highjump dates from 1954.</p>
