As of 2020, Glenn M. Stein is an American independent polar and maritime historian, author, and speaker from Florida. He received a bachelor's degree in public relations with a minor in history from the University of Florida in 1985, and has been a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society (FRGS) since 2006. From 2006 to 2008, Stein worked as the International Polar Year 2007-2008 website historian where he contributed a range of articles on polar history. He was awarded the Journal Prize from the Orders and Medals Research Society in 2009 for his research on two rare Arctic awards and his resulting article, "The Voyage of HMS Investigator (1850-54): Solving the Mysteries of the Arctic Meritorious Service and Gallantry Medals." Stein was also the designer and recipient of the 2009 Antarctic Treaty Summit Medal, created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1959 signing of the Antarctic Treaty that internationally established Antarctica as a scientific preserve.

The majority of writings in this series are biographical articles on 19th and early 20th century polar expeditionary members who received medals and similar awards for their work. These articles typically focus on the achievements or unique contributions of individuals in the context of international polar exploration activities happening at the time. Articles that more broadly cover the history of polar exploration, with a particular focus on medals awarded by various countries, are also included.

Materials in this series date from 2007-2020; these dates reflect the dates the digital files were last updated, which is also the date Stein last made corrections and additions to the document, sometimes after the original publication date. Titles indicate where each article was first published, as well as the date of original publication, noted in parentheses. The series is arranged chronologically based on the date of original publication. Articles that were published in the same year are arranged chronologically based on the date Stein last edited those files.
