            <abstract id="ref1" label="Abstract">Jonathan Duff Reed was the navigator for the S.S. Chantier during the 1926 Byrd Arctic Expedition, where Admiral Richard E. Byrd became the first man to fly over the North Pole. Reed was also a member of the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition (BAE I, 1928-1930). Reed served with the United States Army during World War I, and was a midshipman with the United States Navy. The Jonathan Duff Reed Papers consist of materials related to the 1926 Byrd Arctic Expedition and BAE I, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, portraits of Reed in his expedition gear, photographs taken by Reed during the expeditions, and the Kodak camera that he used. Also included are certificates awarded to Reed from multiple United States military forces, clippings about some of Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expeditions, and obituaries for Byrd. Materials are dated circa 1910-1930, and 1950-1965.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Jonathan Duff Reed (1893-1966) was a member of the 1926 Byrd Arctic Expedition, where Admiral Richard E. Byrd became the first man to fly over the North Pole. Reed was in charge of the supplies and acted as navigator for the S.S. Chantier, the ship that carried the 50 expedition crew members and the plane that would fly over the North Pole. Reed was also a member of the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition (BAE I, 1928-1930). Reed attended the United States Naval Academy and served as a midshipman with the United States Navy. During World War I, he served as first lieutenant with the Infantry Branch of the United States Army stationed in France, and earned five battle stars and the Purple Heart.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Jonathan Duff Reed Papers consist of materials related to the 1926 Byrd Arctic Expedition and first Byrd Antarctic Expedition (BAE I, 1928-1930), including letters of recommendation sent to Admiral Richard E. Byrd on behalf of Reed, portraits of Reed in his expedition gear, photographs taken by Reed during the expeditions, and the Kodak camera he used, equipped with a fast lens for the snow. Also included are newspaper clippings about the expeditions, as well as Byrd's obituaries. Reed's certificate from the United States Navy appointing him as midshipman, his honorable discharge certificate from the United States Army, and a certificate authorizing him to man a lifeboat from the United States Department of Commerce are included. Materials are dated circa 1910-1930, and 1950-1965.</p>
