            <abstract id="ref34" label="Abstract">Ashley Clinton Snow Junior (1906-1975) was the Chief Pilot and Aviation Chief Machinist Mate during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition from 1939-1941. Snow joined the U.S. Navy in 1927 and retired after thirty-two years of service. The Ashley C. Snow Papers contain correspondence, publications, mittens, and gloves, dated circa 1939-1943 and 1993, all of which related to Ashley C. Snow’s service during the U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition. Also included are aviator flight log books kept by Snow during his service in the United States Navy dated February 1929-May 1953.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Ashley Clinton Snow Junior (1906-1975) was the chief pilot and aviation chief machinist mate during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition from 1939-1941. Snow joined the U.S. Navy in 1927, was accepted into flight school in 1929, and complete his training in 1930. He was stationed at East Base during the U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition. He piloted flights over previously undiscovered areas of Antarctica as well as the final evacuation of personnel from East Base. Snow received the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1941 for his service during the expedition. He retired from the U.S. Navy after thirty-two years of service.</p>

            <p>The Ashley C. Snow Papers contain correspondence, “Polar Times” publications, mittens, and gloves from Ashley C.                     <p>Accession No. PA.2025.0007 contains aviator flight log books kept by Snow during his service in the United States Navy. Some of the log books had loose documents tucked inside; these documents were unfolded and kept with the log books they came from. Also included is a National Geographic magazine with an article about East Base in Antarctica, where Snow was stationed during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition from 1939-1941. The log books are dated February 1929-May 1953, and the magazine is from March 1993.</p>
