Biographical Note

Jere H. Lipps (1939-) is a professor, museum curator, and paleobiologist. He attended the University of California (UC), Los Angeles where he earned his bachelors degree (1962) and his PhD (1966), both in geology. Immediately after graduation, he accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Geology Department at UC Davis. Between 1971 and 1982, Lipps led two projects on Antarctic marine biology for the United States Antarctic Research Program; this included the Ross Ice Shelf Project biology team that drilled ice cores through the 420 meter ice shelf and recovered frozen organisms from the sea floor below the ice. During this time, Lipps and his team were based at Palmer Station, Antarctica.

Following his time in Antarctica, Lipps continued studying geology, marine life, and paleobiology in many locations across the globe while continuing to teach. He taught at UC Davis until 1988, when he took a position at UC Berkeley, which he held until his retirement in 2009. He also served as the 9th curator of the UC Museum of Paleontology from 1989 to 1997. As of 2023, Jere Lipps still publishes research as an Emeritus Professor at UC Berkeley. Lipps Island in Antarctica is named in honor of his contributions to the United States Antarctic Research Program.
