 Biographical Note

Katharine Byrd Breyer (1924-1999) and Richard "Dickie" E. Byrd III (1920-1988) were two of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr.'s four children; their mother was Marie Ames Byrd.

Katharine married Robert G. Breyer in 1947; the couple participated in many events and programs memorializing Admiral Byrd in the decades after his death in 1957. Katharine actively sought to preserve her father's legacy throughout her life.

Dickie was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II, and was promoted to lieutenant commander after the war ended. He joined his father on Operation Highjump in Antarctica from 1946-1947. Dickie later worked as a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley.
