Robert Edward Behling served as an Ohio State University Institute of Polar Studies graduate research assistant on the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II (SP-QMLT II) expedition, which was conducted from 1965-1966 by various government and academic institutions. The Traverse expeditions were initiated in the mid-1960s by the U.S. Antarctic Research Program to explore the Queen Maud Land area of Antarctica and study ice accumulation, geomagnetic fields, and glacial topography. Behling’s activities during the expedition included the recording of stratigraphic data from samples procured by the scientist Edgard Picciotto. The Robert Behling Field Notebooks of Observations Recorded During the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II Expedition contains three field notebooks of scientific data gathered during the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II (SP-QMLT II) expedition. The notebooks, dated 1965-1966, contain stratigraphic and other measurements, observations, and questions recorded by Behling.

<p>Robert Edward Behling served as an Ohio State University Institute of Polar Studies (now Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center) graduate research assistant on the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II (SP-QMLT II) expedition, which was conducted from 1965-1966 by government and academic institutions from the United States, Belgium, and Norway. The Traverse expeditions were initiated in the mid-1960s by the U.S. Antarctic Research Program to explore the Queen Maud Land area of Antarctica and study ice accumulation, geomagnetic fields, and glacial topography. Behling’s activities during the expedition were conducted at the southern pole of inaccessibility and other sites, and included the recording of stratigraphic data from samples procured by the scientist Edgard Picciotto and snowfall data measured by accumulation stakes.</p>

<p>The Robert Behling Field Notebooks of Observations Recorded During the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II Expedition consists of three field notebooks containing scientific data gathered during the South Pole-Queen Maud Land Traverse II (SP-QMLT II) expedition, 1965-1966. The notebooks each measure 4.5 x 7 inches and altogether contain 217 pages of stratigraphic and other measurements, observations, and questions recorded by Behling during his participation in SP-QMLT II. Entries include remarks on the initial extreme cold and eventual warming of the air temperature throughout the expedition, best practices for coring stratigraphic samples, and observations of various sastrugi formations. The first entry is dated November 16, 1965, and the final entry is dated February 3, 1966. The notebooks were manufactured with waterproof components by the Eugene Dietzgen Company.</p>
