Cox served the United States Navy in both World Wars, and acted as carpenter and herdsman on Byrd Antarctic Expedition II, 1933-1935, caring for the team's cattle and their housing. Following his return from Antarctica, Cox spent a number of years touring the country with his wife, educating others about his experience. The Edgar F. Cox Papers, which dates from 1907-1975 with most of the materials dating from 1930-1946, contains artifacts, correspondence, photographs and scrapbooks that primarily relate to Cox's experiences during Byrd Antarctic Expedition II and his military service.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Edgar F. Cox was born in 1897 in Pinckneyville, Illinois. He served the United States Navy in both World Wars, and worked as a carpenter and herdsman on Byrd Antarctic Expedition II, 1933-1935. Cox's role in the expedition was caring for the team's cattle and their housing. Following his return from Antarctica, Cox spent a number of years touring the country with his wife, educating others about his experience. He died February 4, 1946.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Edgar F. Cox Papers, dated 1907-1975, with most of the collection dating from 1930-1946, contains scrapbooks, photographs, correspondence, storyboards, diaries, radio scripts, periodicals, medals, artifacts and an autograph book that primarily relate to Cox's role as herdsman and carpenter during Byrd Antarctic Expedition II with some focus on the cattle on the expedition. The collection also contains materials relating to his service during World War I and World War II as well as a coin from 1907 and correspondence and pictures from 1975 regarding the naming of Cox Point in Antarctica.</p>
