Paine and Paine Family Papers, which dates from 1921-1988, and 2010, contains diaries, maps, artifacts, writings, and photographs created or collected by Paine as well as essays, interviews and quadrangle maps created or collected by Paine's family regarding his experiences during Byrd Antarctic Expedition II.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Stuart D. Paine, 1910-1961, was an Antarctic explorer who accompanied Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his second Antarctic expedition in 1933-1935, and was in charge of the Geological Party's dog team, the primary dog sledging party of the expedition season. The expedition traveled 1410 miles by dog sled in 88 days and came within 180 miles of the South Pole. Paine was apt to writing about his exploration. During his time in Antarctica he filled three separate journals, edited the expedition newspaper, "The Barrier Bull," and after his return to the states, wrote numerous stories.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Stuart D. Paine and Paine Family Papers, which dates from 1921-1988 and 2010, contains Paine's diaries, sketches, artifacts, notes, certificates, maps and newsclippings that he appeared to gather during and about the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1933-1935). The collection also contains United States Geological Survey quad maps, essays and interview transcripts created and collected by Paine's family regarding his experience during the expedition and about his lead sledge dog, Jack the Giant Killer.</p>

                    <p>The diaries in this series have been published as Footsteps on the Ice, the Antarctic Diaries of Stuart D. Paine, Second Byrd Expedition, edited by Merlyn L. Paine, University of Missouri Press, 2007. Due to the book's recent publication, the text of the diaries and over 120 photographs and illustrations that are part of four photo albums, loose photographs, and two compact discs are under copyright. The University of Missouri Press may be contacted for permissions, then if the University gives the copyright up, it will revert to Merlyn Paine and then Olin Paine.</p>

                    <head>Scope and Contents</head>
                    <p>The Papers Documenting Involvement in Byrd Antarctic Expedition II series contains diaries, newsletters, photographs, artifacts, maps, position plotting sheets and slides, which date from 1928-1938 and detail Stuart D. Paine's role as a member of the 1933-1935 expedition party of Byrd Antarctic Expedition II. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder titles; some titles were assigned by the creator of the collection, and some determined by staff member Devon Boerman, which are based on topics, titles of published works, or format descriptions. In many of the folders, there is a detailed analysis written by the donor explaining the context and significance of the items within the folder alongside the actual items.</p>

                    <p>The Paine Family Collection on Byrd Antarctic Expedition II series, which dates from 1966-1988 and 2010, contains maps, essays and interview transcripts created or collected by family members of Stuart D. Paine regarding his experience during Byrd Antarctic Expedition II. Many of the maps, which are United States Geological Survey quad maps, are annotated with information relevant to Paine's expedition. Materials are arranged alphabetically by folder titles; some titles were assigned by the creator of the collection, and some determined by staff member Devon Boerman, which are based on topics, titles of published works, or format descriptions.</p>
