Biographical Note

Richard "Dick" A. Bowers (1928-2019) was a structural engineer for the United States (U.S.) Navy Mobile Construction Battalions, also known as the CBs or "Seabees.” Bowers earned a Master's degree in Engineering from Yale University in 1952. After graduating, he started his career in the U.S. Navy. From 1955-1957 during Operation Deep Freeze I and II, Bowers served as part of the U.S. Navy Mobile Construction Battalion (Special) in Antarctica. He was the Officer-in-Charge of building both South Pole Station and an air operations facility at McMurdo Sound. Bowers was awarded the Moreell Medal for his service in Antarctica, an award presented for outstanding contribution to military engineering by a civilian or military member of the U.S. Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He retired from the Navy in 1972. Bowers was a member of the reunion group called the Antarctic Deep Freeze Association (ADFA). Bowers Corner in Antarctica is named for him.

Scope and Contents

The Richard A. Bowers Papers, dated 1945-2013, contain materials created or collected by Richard A. Bowers that relate to his service with the United States Navy Mobile Construction Battalion (Special) in Antarctica during Operation Deep Freeze I and II. Materials include reports, press clippings, notes, photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks, maps, and clothing. Also included are compact discs, DVDs, VHS videocassettes, and 8mm films. In addition, the collection contains audio recordings and transcripts from the Antarctic Deep Freeze oral history project interview with Richard A. Bowers conducted by Dian O. Belanger on October 11, 1998. In the interview, Bowers discusses the planning and construction of South Pole Station and the air operations facility at McMurdo Sound.

The Antarctic Deep Freeze Oral History series contains audio recordings and transcripts of the interview with Richard A. Bowers conducted by Dian O. Belanger on October 11, 1998. This interview was a part of the Antarctic Deep Freeze oral history project, which was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and supported by the Antarctic Deep Freeze Association. Major topics discussed include the planning for Operation Deep Freeze, the construction of South Pole Station and the air operations facility at McMurdo Sound, the working and living conditions in Antarctica, and individuals that Bowers encountered while serving there.
