            <abstract id="ref47" label="Abstract">Lisle Abbot Rose (born 1936) enlisted in the Navy in 1954, serving on three vessels before participating aboard the icebreaker 
                <emph render="italic">Staten Island</emph> in Operation Deepfreeze II between 1956 and 1957. From 1978-1982, he served as the Polar Affairs officer for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environment and Scientific Affairs (OES) where he helped the United States make policies for affairs in the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland. The Lisle A. Rose Papers, dated 1947-2014, contains photographs, diaries, oral histories and slides, primarily regarding Rose's participation in Operation Deep Freeze II and his role as Polar Affairs officer.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Lisle Abbot Rose (born 1936) enlisted in the Navy in 1954, serving on three vessels before participating aboard the icebreaker 
                <emph render="italic">Staten Island</emph> in Operation Deepfreeze II between 1956 and 1957. Rose earned a PhD in American History from the University of California-Berkeley in 1966 and has written several books on the Cold War, American Naval history, and Polar History, including
                <emph render="italic">Explorer: The Life of Richard E. Byrd</emph>. From 1978-1982, he served as the Polar Affairs officer for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environment and Scientific Affairs (OES) where he helped the United States make policies for affairs in the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Lisle A. Rose Papers, dated 1947-2014, contains photographs, diaries, oral history interviews and transcripts, periodicals, slides, a yearbook, reports and correspondence primarily regarding Rose's participation in Operation Deep Freeze II and his role as Polar Affairs officer for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environment and Scientific Affairs (OES). Correspondence includes a letter from Rose's brother Dave dated January 1947, to Rose's parents, while Dave was on Operation Highjump. The collection also includes Deep Freeze II stamps and envelopes as well as photocopies of other polar explorers' papers.</p>
