Biographical Note

Lieutenant Clifford D. Hathaway (1931-2010) enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves in 1947. He re-enlisted in the Navy, no longer as a member of the Reserves, in 1951 and was initially sent to Naval Base Kwajalein in the Republic of the Marshall Islands for the first hydrogen bomb tests. Hathaway was later reassigned on orders to attend Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) School in the United States. Hathaway volunteered for Operation Deep Freeze I (1955-1956) in response to a call from the U.S. Navy for GCA operators to join the Antarctic expedition. In Antarctica, he assisted in the establishment of the Little America V base. Hathaway drove Caterpillar tractors to transport supplies over the snow and ice and helped install equipment for the ground controlled approach systems for aircraft at the base. He also participated in rescue operations for pilots and aircraft.

After his time on Operation Deep Freeze I, Hathaway continued his career in the U.S. Navy. He never returned to Antarctica, and he retired from the Navy in 1973.
