Biographical Note

Dale R. Reed received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1957. After college, he worked in Boulder for the National Bureau of Standards, which led to his training for work in Antarctica. Reed left for Antarctica in November 1957, and served at Ellsworth Station during Operation Deep Freeze III. While there, he wintered over and assisted in cosmic ray studies. Reed returned to the United States in early 1959, and upon returning, signed up to go back to Antarctica on Operation Deep Freeze IV. On this trip, Reed helped with radio signals, geomagnetic information, and gathering data. After he returned from Antarctica, Reed got his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1965. He worked for The Boeing Company for 30 years before he retired in 1995, first in the Aerospace division, and then in the Commercial Airplanes division. Reed Ridge in the Thiel Mountains in Antarctica is named for Dale Reed.
