Biographical Note

Dr. Elmer M. Cranton enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951; he first served as an electronics technician, then trained as a naval aviator in 1952. As an aviator, he became friends with the flight surgeon of his squadron, and decided he wanted to become a doctor. Cranton transferred to the Naval Reserve, and attended Harvard Medical School through the GI bill, where he graduated in 1964. In 1966, he volunteered for the naval post of senior medical officer at McMurdo Station, Antarctica during the winter-over period, and spent 1966-1967 in Antarctica.

Following his time in Antarctica, Cranton stayed in the naval reserve until around 1974, when he decided to resign and focus entirely on his private medical practice. As of 2003, he is retired from practicing medicine. Cranton Bay in Antarctica is named for him.
