Biographical Note

John Elbert Sater (circa 1930-2006) received his bachelors degree from the Ohio State University in 1954 through the Institute of Geodesy, Photogrammetry, and Cartography. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he was assigned to teach photogrammetry to Army Engineers. Sater was then transferred to the First Engineering Arctic Task Force and sent to Greenland in 1955-1956, where he was assigned to make a planometric map of a glacier face, as well as studying the construction of snow compacted runways on ice.

During the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957, Sater did fieldwork on the McCall Glacier in Alaska that was funded by the Arctic Institute of North America (AINA). Following the IGY, he traveled to Antarctica in 1960 as the United States representative on the British Antarctic Survey. Sater then worked as the station leader on ARLISS II in the Arctic from 1962-1963. From 1963-1964, Sater was a supply coordinator for the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory; he then returned to AINA in late 1964, where he continued working for the remainder of his career. From 1970 until its closure in 1980, Sater was the leader of the United States operation of AINA. During this time, AINA funded itself by doing ice forecasts for oil companies.
