John Schindler (1931-2014) worked at the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory (NARL) in Barrow, Alaska from 1960-1973. He received his bachelor’s degree in botany and master’s in phycology from Michigan State University. At the end of the summer of 1960, he was hired to work at NARL. Schindler was promoted to Assistant Director in the spring of 1961 and took over the Director position in 1971. He worked at the Arctic Research Laboratory Ice Stations (ARLIS) 1-6, which studied the development of thick areas of glacierlike ice. Schindler was a member of the Committee for Project Chariot, and he also briefly worked with the Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (AIDJEX) feasibility study in 1972. From the fall of 1976 to 1981, he worked as Husky Oil’s first environmentalist for quality control on the drilling of the Petroleum Reserve pipeline.
