Biographical Note

Alfred George (1923-2008) attended college at Oregon State University; his time there was interrupted by a three year tour with the United States Army during World War II. Following his graduation from Oregon State University in 1950, he worked for the United States Forest Service at the Mt. Hood National Ranger District, where he worked in fire control and office management. In 1956, George and his family relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska after he was hired as an executive officer at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute prior to the beginning of the International Geophysical Year. George further served the university as the associate comptroller for research, and served as the university's first land manager. He retired in 1978, and then worked as a land manager in the pipeline coordinator's office at the Department of Natural Resources until at least 1982.
