Dr. Harrison H. Richardson was the youngest participant in Byrd's third Antarctic expedition, United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941), at the age of 20, who drove a team of dogs and was tasked with observing the meteorological conditions during the expedition. He also participated in Operation Highjump as a medical officer for the United States Navy. In addition to these official roles, Richardson filmed these expeditions with a 16mm camera and has been cited as the first person to produce color films while in Antarctica. A mountain in the Fosdick range in the Marie Byrd Land region of Antarctica was named Mount Richardson in his honor.

In 2003, the Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program (BPRCAP) received a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation to preserve two films documenting the U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition in this collection. The film is believed to be some of the first color footage shot in Antarctica. The grant-produced material in this collection includes use copies in the form of VHS, Betacam and DVDs, and preservation film copies.
