Joseph (Joe) Hill Jr. (1913-1999) was a member of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II from 1933-1935. Hill was a Boy Scout; he learned that fellow scout Paul Siple had gone to Antarctica with Admiral Richard E. Byrd on a prior expedition, and wrote to Byrd without his parents' knowledge offering to participate in whatever capacity he could. A year later, Hill heard back from Byrd's personnel manager who invited him to interview in Boston. He hitchhiked from his home in Canyon, Texas to get to the interview, and was added to the expedition as a cook at age 20. While enroute to Antarctica, Hill was promoted to Admiral Byrd's personal orderly. Upon landing in Antarctica, Hill was informed he would be part of the group wintering over on the ice. In Antarctica, he acted as a mechanic and tractor driver, as well as helping to build Little America II and Byrd's Advance Base.

Following his return from Antarctica, Hill graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in mechanical engineering, and began working for the Douglas Aircraft Group. He also spoke at universities in Texas about his time in Antarctica, and published a book in 1937 called

The papers include a scrapbook documenting Hill's work to join the expedition as well as newspaper clippings about the expedition itself. Approximately 140 glass slides with black and white images of Hill's time in Antarctica are also included, as well as correspondence received by his parents while he was in Antarctica both from and about Hill. Correspondence received by Hill from other members of the expedition is also included in the collection, as well as reunion planning information, clippings about Antarctica, and scienctific reports from Antarctica.
