Biographical Note

Paul Robert Streich (1928-1999) was an aviator and Commander in the United States Navy. In 1947, he joined the United States Navy after his high school graduation. Streich was assigned to the Heavy Photographic Squadron as a pilot in 1952. That summer, his team mapped Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Later that year, Streich’s team worked on photographic mapping across the Territory of Alaska. The experience led him to volunteer for Operation Deep Freeze in 1955. On the 1956-1957 trip led by Admiral Byrd, Streich helped set up runways and establish the base, Little America V, near Kainan Bay in Antarctica. While he was there, Streich served as second in command of his team, led photographic mapping expeditions, and flew from Little America to Byrd Station. His aircraft was the first aircraft to ever land at Byrd Station. During a snowstorm in 1956, Streich’s plane crashed and he and his flight crew walked for almost 40 miles before being rescued. When Streich came back to the United States in 1957, he returned to the Heavy Photographic Squadron. Streich retired from the United States Navy in 1973, but continued flying privately until at least 1997. Mount Streich in Antarctica is named for him.
