Biographical Note

Benjamin Remington (1932-2002) became a Meteorological Technician when he joined the United States Air Force in 1951 after graduating high school. Remington joined the United States Weather Bureau and was assigned to Operation Deepfreeze II in 1957. His group did weather observations at Little America in Antarctica, including surface observations and upper air observations. They used weather balloons carrying small devices that transmitted information like atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity through radio waves. In 1958, Remington took classes at the University of Virginia and worked in the Weather Bureau office in Washington, D.C. for the Polar Operations Project. In 1959, he returned to the South Pole as one of the first ozone observers. Remington also completed more weather observations and helped measure a snow mine. Mount Remington in Victoria Land, Antarctica, was named for him in 1964 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names.

When he returned to the United States in 1960, Remington earned a degree in business administration from the University of Colorado. He became the Executive Officer at the Southwest Fisheries Center in La Jolla, California, and worked there for 20 years before retiring.

The Benjamin Remington Oral History, dated 2000 to 2001, contains audio recordings, administrative information, and transcripts of the interview between Remington and Brian Shoemaker of the American Polar Society conducted on February 25, 2000. This interview was a part of a series of polar oral histories sponsored by the American Polar Society and Ohio State University's Byrd Polar Research Center Archival Program, with funding from the National Science Foundation. Major topics discussed include Remington's time as a meteorologist in Antarctica during Operation Deep Freeze II and during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) 1958-1959. He reminisced about winters in Antarctica, meteorological data taken while there, and friendships with other men who were there at the same time, as well as describing experiments involving weather balloons.
