Oesch was a philatelist and he was interested in polar philately, which is the collecting of postal memorabilia from polar regions, and the postal history of Antarctica. The Robert S. Oesch Papers, dated 1955-1984, consists of covers, newspaper articles and clippings, stickers, and other materials related to Oesch's interest in Antarctica’s postal history and polar philately.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Robert Summer Oesch (1921-2006) was an artist who designed cachets and cancel stamps. Oesch was a philatelist and he was interested in polar philately, which is the collecting of postal memorabilia from polar regions, and the postal history of Antarctica. Oesch studied engineering at Case Western Reserve University and the Ohio State University. During World War II, he served in the 5th Air Force B-24 Bomb Group. After his service ended, Oesch attended and graduated from the Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked as an artist in Los Angeles for several years. He later moved to San Diego and worked for the Naval Ocean Systems Center.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Robert S. Oesch Papers, dated 1955-1984, consists of covers, newspaper articles and clippings, stickers, and other materials related to Oesch's interest in Antarctica’s postal history and polar philately. The covers are stamped from a polar philately collector in Argentina and feature postage stamps that commemorate Argentina's Antarctica expeditions, the creation of bases in Argentine Antarctica, and the Falkland Islands. Newspaper articles, clippings, and the 
                <emph render="italic">Antartida</emph> magazine feature stories about people's experiences living in Antarctica, updates on scientific and professional developments related to Arctic expeditions, and polar philately. These papers also include lists of covers sought out by polar philatelists and a timeline of Antarctica's postal history. Some materials in this collection are in Spanish.</p>
