Dr. William M. Smith was a psychologist and polar observer who traveled to Antarctica from 1957-1960 during International Geophysical Year 1957-1958 and Operation Deep Freeze. Smith conducted interviews with the International Geophysical Year staff for his psychological studies regarding topics such as isolation and personnel selection.
The William Smith Papers, dated from 1947-1971, contains publications, diaries and manuscripts concerning Operation Deep Freeze III in 1957, and International Geophysical Year (IGY) 1957-1958, including interviews with wintering personnel. The publications, which range from 1947-1971, appear to be research material for Smith's psychological studies on polar scientists. His interviews with International Geophysical Year staff and others in Antarctica took place between 1956-1960.
