Biographical Note

Steve Ernst Stivers was born on 24 March 1965 and was raised in Ripley, Ohio. He attended The Ohio State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and International Relations in 1989 and a Master’s degree in Business Administration in 1996. He later earned a Master’s degree in strategic studies from the Army War College.

Stivers joined the Ohio Army National Guard in 1985, which he continues to serve in; as of 2024, he holds the rank of brigadier general. He also worked for Bank One and the Ohio Company. He worked for two years as the Finance Director for the Franklin County Republican Party and five years as a staff member in the Ohio Senate. On 9 January, 2003, Stivers was appointed to fill the term of State Senator Priscilla Mead in the Ohio Senate after she resigned, representing the 16th Ohio Senate District. In 2004, he was called back to active duty and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom, later being awarded a Bronze Star for his leadership. In December 2005, he resumed his position as senator at the Ohio Senate and continued his role until 2009. During his time as senator, he chaired the Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee, vice-chaired the Finance and Financial Institutions Committee, and served on the Ways and Means Committee, the Judiciary Committee on Civil Justice, and the Judiciary Committee for Criminal Justice.

Stivers ran as the Republican candidate for the United States House of Representatives in the 2008 election, but lost to Democratic candidate Mary Jo Kilroy. He ran again and won in the 2010 election. Stivers served in the United States House of Representatives from 2011 to May 2021, representing Ohio’s 15th Congressional District during the 112th through 117th Congresses. As a representative, he served on the Committee on Financial Services, as Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance, and the Rules Committee. He chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) from 2016-2018, not seeking re-election after Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives during the 2018 election. Stivers resigned in May 2021 to serve as President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. As of 2024, he is an American businessman and politician from the Republican Party.
