            <abstract id="ref3" label="Abstract">Dale Butland was Senator John Glenn’s press secretary, speechwriter, and campaign director from 1980 to 1999. The Dale Butland Oral History dates February 19 and October 7, 2025 and consists of an audio recording and edited transcript of the oral history interview between Dale Butland and Cory Ackerman. Butland discusses his role as a press secretary, speechwriter, and campaign director for Senator John Glenn’s 1984 presidential campaign and 1992 Senate reelection campaign.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Dale Butland was Senator John Glenn’s press secretary, speechwriter, and campaign director. Butland’s political career began in the Jimmy Carter administration, where he served as a Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Trade. In 1980, Butland joined Senator John Glenn’s staff as a speechwriter and small business legislative assistant. Butland was Senator Glenn’s press secretary, speechwriter, and campaign director for Glenn’s 1984 presidential election campaign. Following the campaign, Butland became Senator Glenn’s press secretary and later directed his 1992 Senate reelection campaign. After Senator Glenn retired in 1999, Butland founded Butland and Associates, a media consulting firm, and continued to advise Democratic campaigns and ballot initiatives. As of 2026, he is retired.</p>
