In 1977 Barbara Chapman and Mary Ann Bradford were hired to develop a nursing program at Otterbein University. The Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), a two–year program, began in September 1978 with the first class graduating in 1980. In 1978 a Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) was also developed. The first RN-BSN students were admitted in 1979 and graduated in 1982. The last students graduated from the ASN program in 1987.
Eda Mikolaj was hired in 1990 to establish a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program. Between 1993 and 2019 specific majors (listed below) were added to the MSN program. In 1996 both a post-master’s certificate program and the first distance-learning classes were created. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) post-masters’ degree was created.
The Otterbein University Department of Nursing Records (115 MB, 8 files) contains five PDF documents of panels that chronicle the history of the Department of Nursing by decade from 1970 through 2019. The panels are accompanied by three department timelines in Word and PowerPoint.
