Marilyn Smith began her nursing career as a volunteer ‘candy striper’ and nurses’ aide while in high school at Starling Loving Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She entered the White Cross School of Nursing through the Cadet Nurse Corp program. Smith received permission from the school to get married before graduation if she agreed not to become pregnant. Eventually, she did raise three daughters while continuing to work as a nurse because she felt she could not leave nursing, and the hospital had a nursery for nurses’ children.
