Grayce Sills attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in the 1940s. The summer after her second year of college she spent the summer at the Rockland State Mental Hospital in New York state as part of a Quaker program for college students. Her summer stay extended to a year, and she decided to become a nurse. Sills entered the three-year nursing program at Rockland State Hospital. Then she continued her education, obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University Teacher’s College. Before completing her degree, she returned to Ohio to care for relatives, then took a nursing position at Dayton State Hospital. Eventually she completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Dayton. Sills moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she taught psychiatric nursing at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and earned her PhD. She became a Professor Emeritus when she retired from the College of Nursing faculty in 1993.

The collection is open to the public and is available for viewing in the Medical Heritage Center. Materials do not circulate and must be used in the supervised reading room. Restrictions, including copyright, may exist and some materials may be too fragile to photocopy or digitize. The MHC charges for duplication services, which must be performed by staff.
