Emanuel D. Rudolph (1927-1992) served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. He graduated from New York University in 1950 with his bachelor’s degree in biology. In 1955 Rudolph graduated from Washington University with a Ph.D. in botany. His thesis was entitled Revisionary Studies in the Lichen Family Blasteniaceae in North America North of Mexico. He began his teaching career at Wellesley College. Rudolph came to The Ohio State University Department of Botany and Plant Pathology in 1961. He chaired the department of botany from 1978 to 1987, supervised the doctoral dissertations of students and taught courses in biology, botany, lichenology, mycology, as well as the history of botany and biology.
