Historical Sketch

In 1997 The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center was concerned about competition in the area of cardiac care from a specialized, physician owned, for profit corporation that was known as MedCath. Thomas E. Williams, Jr., MD encouraged Ohio State to take the proactive, strategic response of establishing a dedicated heart hospital to ensure the future success of cardiac services at Ohio State. In 1998 a working group began to plan for the new heart hospital. The Ohio State University board of trustees approved the plan for a heart hospital in 2000. The Ross family donated $10 million and the hospital was named for business leader and philanthropist Richard M. Ross. It opened in the fall of 2004 with 90 inpatient beds, 10 outpatient beds, and six surgical rooms.
