Peter A. Volpe, MD (d. 1983) graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1929 and his medical degree in 1931, both from The Ohio State University. He was a decorated veteran of World War II receiving a Purple Heart for wounds received when his jeep hit a land mine, the Bronze Star and four battle stars for his meritorious service as executive officer of the 76th Medical Battalion. Dr. Volpe’s first wife, Jeannette, was a nurse and both of their children, son Peter and daughter Mary, followed them into the medical profession. Peter became a physician specializing in colon and rectal surgery who practiced in the San Francisco, California, area, and Mary a registered nurse. In addition to his administrative role at The Ohio State University Hospital, he was also an administrator at multiple veterans’ hospitals.

The Peter A. Volpe, MD Papers (0.25 linear feet) contains material related to Volpe’s medical career. Graduation ephemera is from Peter A. Volpe’s own graduation from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1931 and that of his son, also Peter A. Volpe (1936 - 2021), who graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1961. The letter from Charles A. Doan, MD welcomed the elder Dr. Volpe back to Ohio State when he returned in 1955 to serve as a hospital administrator. The hospital brochure dates from Volpe’s time in this role.
