Richard William Zollinger (January 10, 1912 – September 13, 1999) graduated from The Ohio State University in 1933 with his bachelor’s. He then attended Harvard University and obtained his medical degree in 1936.

Zollinger was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.

In 1955, Zollinger founded the Mount Carmel General Surgery program with a primary focus on developing physicians into broad-based general surgeons who were able to serve their communities with a high level of surgical expertise. He then served as Chairman on the Department of Surgery for many years. He was also an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University.

Additionally, Zollinger designed several surgical instruments including a vein stripper, a leg holder, an atraumatic tissue forceps, and an anastomatic intestinal clamp.

Zollinger married Mary Louise Torbert and they had five children.
