Biography

Marie Josephine Isselstein (December 21, 1906 – February 2, 1968) was born in Dunn, Indiana, fifth of ten children born to Anna and Joseph Isselstein. She grew up in Athens County, Ohio, graduating from Athens County Public Elementary School April 23, 1920 and Nelsonville High School May 22, 1924. She then attended Holzier Hospital School of Nursing in Gallipolis, Ohio in 1928.

Isselstein received a B.A. from Ohio University in 1935 and a M.A. in Public Health from Columbia University in 1938. She was also a member of the American Public Health Association and licensed as an RN in Alabama (January 1942).

Isselstein served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Because her name is German and sounds Jewish, she changed it to Stone during this time.

Isselstein married Roland Desenier in 1952.
