Biography of William H. HavenerWilliam H. Havener, MD was the first full-time ophthalmologist at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1959-1961 and 1972-1988. After being appointed chairman in 1959 at age 35, Havener established an innovative teaching program for residents. Havener became interested in repairing retinal detachments, and developed a technique using a donor fascia lata for scleral buckling. He was dedicated to residents and student teaching and set up a number of formal instruction programs for both the medical school and residency. A distinguished teacher and internationally known author, Dr. Havener was an innovative and skillful surgeon, thoughtful citizen, an avid gardener, and most of all, a considerate and caring physician.
Scope and ContentThe William H. Havener, MD Papers (approximately 26 linear feet) is a collection of material produced by Dr. Havener. It is composed of six series and primarily contains awards and films of eye surgeries.
Statement of ArrangementSeries I: Oversized (18 boxes) contains three-dimensional items that were too large to fit in standard-size boxes. These items include awards and book plates. Series II: Awards and Certificates (0.25 box) contains awards and certificates. This series is arranged in alphabetical order. Series III: Media (2 boxes) contains audio recordings and films. All films are spooled in reverse order. This series is arranged according to type of medium. Series IV: Personal (0.25 box) contains information of a more personal nature including correspondence. This series is arranged alphabetically. Series V: Publications (0.25 box) contains publications produced by Dr. Havener. This series is arranged alphabetically. Series VI: Teaching (0.25 box) contains information related to courses taught by Dr. Havener. This series is arranged alphabetically.
Restrictions on AccessThe collection is open to the public and is available for viewing during the hours that the Medical Heritage Center is open to the public (1-5PM, Monday-Friday) or by appointment. Materials do not circulate and must be used in the supervised reading room.
Restrictions, including copyright, may exist and some materials may be too fragile to photocopy or digitize. The MHC charges for duplication services, which must be performed by staff.
