The Society for Slovene Studies is a scholarly, non-profit organization founded in 1973 that is committed to the promotion of Slovene studies. It is an internationally recognized association that disseminates scholarly information on Slovene studies through the organization of meetings and conferences, and through through the preparation of scholarly works for publication. The records of the Society for Slovene Studies include correspondence, financial records, membership records, information about the Society's participation in conferences, sponsoring of scholarly panels, as well as materials regarding its publications. Also included is a set of the Society's newsletters and its publications, e.g., festschrifts, directories, and issues of
Slovene Studies: Journal of the Society for Slovene Studies. Among the records may be found information on the founding of the Society for Slovene Studies in 1973; its executive administration, constitution and by laws; its publications, website, conferences (including Young Scholars panels and collaborative panels with Central Europeanists); membership (lists, international and honorary memberships); financial reports on dues, bequests, donations, student prizes, publication costs, and subventions. Other topics include Slovenia in Crisis, 1986-1991 - Slovenia's independence, the Bled Conference of 1988, American Scholars for an Independent Slovenia (ASIS), immigration studies scholars; the "Hurricane Conference, Boca Raton, Florida, 1998- the Plecnik sessions, the crisis in the Society's administration and the solution; and the proposals for a Center for Slovene Studies.

Arrangement of Materials
The records of the Society for Slovene Studies are arranged in eight series. The first six correspond to the individual officers of the organization who created each series, and these are arranged in chronological order according to the officers' terms of service.

Historical Note
The Society for Slovene Studies (SSS) is a scholarly non-profit organization dedicated to fostering closer communication among scholars interested in Slovene studies, promoting the dissemination of scholarly information on Slovene studies through the organization of meetings and conferences, and preparing scholarly works for publication.
Founded in 1973 as a society of academics committed to the promotion of Slovene studies in the United States and Canada, the Society for Slovene Studies is today an internationally recognized association of scholars with members in many countries of the world. Initially based at the Institute on East Central Europe of Columbia University (1973-83), the Society for Slovene Studies moved to the Center for Slavic and East European Studies of The Ohio State University (1983-90), and then to the Russian and East European Institute of Indiana University (1990-91) and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of the same university (1991-95). From 1995-99 the Society for Slovene Studies' center was in the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Studies, the University of Alberta, from where it moved for two years to Indiana University (1999-2001), six years at Syracuse University (2001-2007), and now Bowling Green State University (2007-). Since 1976 the SSS has been affiliated with the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES, formerly AAASS) and participates in its national and international programs. In 1991the Society also became an associate member of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) and takes part in its conferences and activities.

Scope and Contents
The records of The Society for Slovene Studies are arranged in series corresponding to the creator, each of whom served as an officer of the Society (Toussaint Hocevar, Carole Rogel, Henry R. Cooper, Tom Priestly, John K. Cox, and Metod Milac). Additional series include the Society's newsletter and the Society's publications, e.g., festschrifts, directories, and issues of
Slovene Studies: Journal of the Society for Slovene Studies. The series are arranged in chronological order according to the presidential terms. Note that (1) the records of Hocevar, who served as Secretary/Treasurer (1979-1982) under the Society's first president, Rado Lencek, are first chronologically, and (2) the records of Cox, who served as Secretary/Treasurer under Tom Priestly, follow Priestly's. The newsletters and publications follow Milac's series. The original order of the folders within each series is preserved. Note that Priestly's materials are digital - scanned documents on a DVD.
