        <bioghist id="ref27">
            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Edward B. Haskell (1865-1935) was a member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, which was the first organized missionary society in the United States. Haskell graduated from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1891, and went on to become a missionary in Bulgaria and Turkey, where he was born. He was also a co-founder of the American Farm School in Salonika, Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, and Greece. In 1912, Haskell received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Mariette College. In 1927, the King of Bulgaria decorated Haskell for his 35 years of service to Bulgaria.</p>

            <p>The Edward B. Haskell Papers contain copies of correspondence, newspaper clippings, book articles, and photographs related to Haskell's time as a missionary. The originals of the the papers are in the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions archives in Houghton Library at Harvard University.</p>
