Historical Note

The John R. Barns Iconography Collection contains materials related to the Mount Athos Center and the Hilandar Monastery. The Mount Athos Center is located in the historic Nedelkos Mansion in Thessaloniki, Greece. It was founded in 2000 by the Municipality of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Holy Community of Mount Athos. The center houses the bookstore, the archives and its book stock, as well as the pilgrim’s office of Mount Athos. The Hilandar Monastery is one of the twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries located in Mount Athos in Greece. It was founded in 1198, by the Archbishop of the Serbian Church, Saint Sava and his father Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, The monastery is a focal point of Serbian religious and secular culture.

The collection also contains materials from the exhibition "Icons: Collections from Tallinn" at the Mikkeli Muuseum in Tallinn, Estonia. Icons are religious works of art in Christianity that generally depict Christ, Mary, and various saints and angels.

As of 2013, John Barns was a parishioner and the iconologist at the Christ The Saviour Orthodox Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Barns presented his lecture “"Mount Athos: Glimpses into The Divine Garden" at Agia Sophia Gallery in January 2013.
