Liturgical music was originally part of the religious service. The Liturgy was the part of the service that allowed churchgoers to participate in the service through a communal response. The liturgical chanting of the Russian Orthodox Church includes the Kievan chant is an example of this. This chanting dates back to the Byzantine Empire and continued into the Ottoman Empire with composers such as Prince Cantemir of Romania.

As of 2018, Edward Kasinec is a Research Associate at the Harriman Institute at Columbia University and a Visiting Fellow at Hoover Institution. He has served as the Reference Librarian/Archivist for Harvard University’s Ukrainian Research Institute Library along with being the librarian for Slavic Collections, University of California, Berkeley and the Curator of the Slavic and Baltic Division of The New York Public Library. He has authored books on Slavic and Russian studies along with being a member of the American Association for Advancement Slavic Studies.
