The Pogo Collection includes correspondence with newspaper editors, publisher Simon and Schuster, and the Hall Syndicate, which syndicated the
Pogo strip. Included is correspondence relating to the National Cartoonists Society, and with other cartoonists. The papers include extensive files from fan correspondence, requests to reprint
Pogo artwork, requests from charities for special drawings, military insignia designed by Kelly,and proposals to commercialize
Pogo characters. Included are articles authored by Kelly, manuscripts from his many
Pogo books, some promotional materials, photographs of Kelly taken for publicity purposes, and photographs of Kelly with well known persons. Also included are newspaper and periodical articles about Kelly, and his extensive public appearances. Kelly's business and personal financial records are also included.

Arrangement of Materials
The Pogo Collection has been organized into four series: Professional and General Correspondence and Papers; Fan Correspondence; Business Accounts and Papers, and Artifacts. The first series, Professional and General Correspondence and Papers, constitutes the bulk of the collection and is composed of several subseries. The second series, Fan Correspondence, has been organized chronologically by year. This is in variance with the original organization as Kelly kept fan mail in alphabetical order, starting new files from time to time, probably as the earlier files became too large. Business accounts and papers have been organized chronologically by year. Artifacts consists of promotional items.

Biographical Note
Biography of Walt Kelly b. Walter Crawford Kelly, 1913-1973. Comic strip artist, editorial cartoonist, animator. Kelly's only formal art training was in high school. His early employment included work as an animator with the Disney Studio (1935-1941) and freelance comic book work. He worked as art director and editorial cartoonist for the short-lived
N.Y. Star (1948-1949). He is best known for the comic strip,
Pogo, which first appeared in newspapers in
The Star on October 4, 1948. The character of Pogo had appeared earlier in
Animal Comics, a comic book series, in the December/January 1941/1942 issue. The comic strip,
Pogo, was published until July 1975. Kelly received several awards, including the Heywood Broun Award for his editorial cartoons and the National Cartoonists Society Reuben award in 1951. In 1954 Kelly became the first comic strip artists to have his work represented in the Library of Congress.

This section has been organized into three subseries: Publicity; General Papers and Correspondence; and Professional Correspondence and Papers.
Scope and Contents note
The papers and correspondence of the professional organizations with which Kelly was affiliated, such as his publisher, Simon and Schuster, the Hall Syndicate, the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), the Newspaper Comics Council, the Library of Congress, and the Western Printing Company, have been filed in thus subseries. This subseries also includes correspondence with significant groups, such as newspaper editors, government officials and artists. Correspondence with individual artists includes, among others, Milton Caniff, Al Capp, and Hank Ketcham. Correspondence with fellow artists and editors can also be found in the general correspondence files. Also included are letters declining commercialization proposals for
Pogo.

Kelly maintained extensive correspondence files on his lecture engagements, requests to reproduce strips and requests for special drawings. Kelly was generous with his time and talents for several charities. Kelly was particularly fond of doing special drawings for the armed services. Also included in this subseries are critiques of the strip. Scattered throughout the subseries are articles about the strip and miscellaneous manuscripts. The researcher should refer to the inventory index to gain access to these files. Also available are papers and correspondence from individual projects for magazines, radio and television, and organizations, including papers from Kelly's many trips abroad.

Scope and Contents note
The papers and correspondence of the professional organizations with which Kelly was affiliated, such as his publisher, Simon and Schuster, the Hall Syndicate, the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), the Newspaper Comics Council, the Library of Congress, and the Western Printing Company, have been filed in this subseries. The National Cartoonists Society papers include general NCS correspondence as well as the correspondence and papers from Kelly's tenure in 1954-1955 as president. The correspondence in this subseries also contains consistent refusals to commercialize, exploit and/or license the Pogo characters. Also contained are the conditions for granting permission for a reprint: 1) the drawings must be done by Kelly or an assistant, or photostatically reproduced from a book or strip (no outside artists); 2) a copyright notice ("Copyright 1956 by Walt Kelly) must be prominently placed.

Fan mail has been organized chronologically to allow the researcher to examine the response by fans to a particular strip or series of strips. Kelly kept fan correspondence in alphabetical order, in all likelihood so that he could check whether a previous request has been received from a fan. Many of the fan letters were request for strips or books which Kelly sent whenever the requested strip or book was available. If the requested strip was not available, Kelly would sometimes provide a different strip or a photostat of the strip. Kelly frequently drafted a reply in long-hand or on the typewriter on the verso of the fan letter which was later typed by one of his assistants. Fan correspondents wrote general letters of admiration, but would also write in response to a particular strip or series of strips. Fan mail in 1952 and 1953 consisted substantially of requests for "I Go Pogo" pins.
