This collection of his papers and artifacts contains correspondence, blueprints for his fanzine 'Monsters and Heroes' as well as the camera ready copy for his unpublished book 'The History of the Comic Book: A Journey into Creative Potential'. The collection contains many Golden Age comic book tear sheets from the 1940s arranged by story title as well as some Superman related materials. Larry Ivie was an American comics artist, writer, and collector who was active in comics fandom in the middle part of the 20th century. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1936. He moved after high school, in the mid 1950s, to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts. Ivie provided painted covers and other editorial material for early issues of ‘Castle of Frankenstein’ and in the mid-to-late 1960s he had his art published in the magazines ‘Galaxy Science Fiction’ and ‘If’. He co-created the comic book ‘T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents’ and wrote several stories for Marvel Comics and the horror magazines ‘Creepy’ and ‘Eerie’.

He was a prominent part of the New York comics fan culture scene in the 1960s with a large personal library of comic books and tear sheets. In the late 1960s he self-published seven issues of his own newsstand magazine ‘Monsters and Heroes’. The magazine specialized in fantasy and science fiction art and featured articles on monster, science fiction, superhero and adventure movies. The back covers were illustrations by Ivie of Edgar Rice Burroughs titles. Ivie drew his own superhero ‘Altron Boy’ for the magazine.

Ivie wrote an unpublished history of the comic book. It was camera ready by 1973 with a forward by Stan Lee and even though Ivie worked with Nostalgia Press to publish it, the title never made it to press.

Ivie made a significant number of amateur superhero films. These 16mm home movies were often filmed on location, including in Central Park, and they mostly feature Ivie and his friends recreating comic book stories. They influenced the amateur films of the screenwriter Donald F. Glut. Ivie designed and created homemade superhero costumes for these home movies, including full Batman, Superman and Captain America costumes.These costumes represent one of the earliest examples we have of cosplay.

Ivie moved to California in the 1970s and died there of lung cancer in January 2014, aged 77.

 Scope and Contents

The collection contains correspondence, magazine layouts, camera ready copy, articles, zines, photostats, tear sheets, 16mm films and costumes.

Artist Sandy Plunkett donated the collection to BICLM in 2015 and it includes correspondence between Ivie and Plunkett spanning the years from the late 1970s to the mid 2000s. Other correspondence dates from the 1950s to the 1970s and is mostly between Ivie and various aspiring young cartoonists. It includes examples of their work and some photographs of them in superhero costumes modeling for gesture drawing poses. The collection contains blueprints for Ivie's 1967 fanzine 'Monsters and Heroes' and correspondence from fans about the magazine. The draft and camera-ready copy for Ivie's unpublished, 'The History of the Comic Book', plus the correspondence with Nostalgia Press from the mid 1970s about the book's publication, are also here.

The collection contains some Superman related material including photographs of 'Superman Day', in Metropolis, Illinois from January 1972 as well as zines, indexes, photostats, and clippings that Ivie collected about other cartoonists and on comics related topics.

Ivie collected comic books widely and this collection contains his extensive gathering of golden age comic book stories. There are many tear sheets mostly from the 1940s of over forty story titles.

Ivie shot many amateur superhero films. The collection contains thirty-seven 16mm home movies shot between the late 1950s and the early 1970s. They include titles such as Superman, Rocketman, Flash Gordon, Batman, Captain Marvel, Frankenstein, and Captain America. The collection also includes handmade costumes Ivie created for these home movies including a Batman, a Robin, two Superman and two Captain America costumes.

The collection contains thirty-seven 16mm films that will require a projector to view. The films have not yet been viewed by BICLM. Some have signs of mold and require preservation. They are candidates for digitization.

Subseries 1: The correspondence between Plunkett and Ivie dates from the 1970s to 2009 and is arranged chronologically. From 2001 letters were almost weekly and include many photocopied examples of strips, comic book pages and drawings which Ivie or Plunkett sometimes disucss in the letters. The correspondence itself is mostly photocopied letters. From 2001 letters are addressed to both Sandy Plunkett and Brian Arpthorp. The correspondence includes duplicate photocopies which have not been sorted or removed. Scope and contents notes have been added to folders as a very general guide to topics that are touched on.
