 Biographical Note

Draper Hill was born July 1, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an editorial cartoonist and distinguished historian. As an undergradauted at Harvard University, he worked on the staff of the harvard Lampoon before graduating in 1957. From 1960 to 1963, as Fulbright Scholar he studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (England). He began his career as a reporter and cartoonist at the Quincy Patriot Ledger (MA), moved to the Worcester Telegram (MA) as an editorial cartoonist in 1964. Later in 1971 he began as editorial to the Commerical Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee, before joing the Detriot News in 1976. In Detriot, Hill was well-known for his caricatures of Detroit Mayor, Coleman Young (in office 1974 to 1994)

Hill was also an eminent cartoon historian authoring several books on eighteenth century English caricaturist, James Gillray. In 1983 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to work on a biography of Thomas Nast.

He served as President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) and wrote its magazine history column.

Hill and his wife Sarah (nee Adams) married in 1967 and they had two children, Jennifer and Jonathan. Hill passed away May 13, 2009, aged 73 years.

 Scope and Contents

Draper and Sarah Collection and Papers was received in four separate accessions and the collection has been origanized by acession year.

Series 1: 1997 Accession includes original editorial cartoons by Burt Thomas, Hy Lewis, and other artists, rough sketches by Draper Hill, velox reproductions and tear sheets of editorial cartoons by Draper Hill, and clippings.

Series 2: 2007 Accession features a valise owned by Joseph Keppler and an original James Gillray sketchbook.

Series 3: 2009 Accession contains materials on Joesph Keppler that was obtained or compiled by Draper Hill.

Series 4: 2017 Accession contains mainly cartoon research materials gathered and used by Draper Hill. In addition, there are sketches, roughs, reproductions of Hill's works, clippings, correspondence and material related to the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC). This series is preliminarily arranged and has been rehoused in approximately the same order as it was received in 2017.

Sketchbook with leather covers and brass clasp, signed an dated on the inside pages 'James Gillray, -27 - St. James's Street - London - July 23rd 1801-' in brown pen and ink. On Whatman wove paper dated 1794, containing numerous light pencil sketches, two strengthened in pen and ink, depicting the quay at Margate, numerous sailing vessels, a bathing machine, various character studies including Mr. Silvertongue,' a gambling house operator and extensive pencil notes recording incidents and characters. Sketchbook is believed to be the starting point for Gillray's unpublished series 'The Journey to Margate.'

This folder housed Gillray prints purchased by Draper Hill and contains notes relating to their sale at Sotheby's in 1927.
