Biographical Note

Erwin and Alfred Bergdoll were brothers whose German-American family made their fortune in brewing in Philadelphia in the second half of the nineteenth century. Their father Grover Cleveland Bergdoll was an early aviator, racing driver and World War I draft dodger. He met their mother Berta Francks, in a German sanitarium in 1926 and the couple went on to have 7 children, 5 of whom, including Erwin and Alfred, were born in Germany.

Berta and the children moved to the US in 1935. Grover returned in 1939 and was sentenced to eight years in Fort Leavenworth for desertion and escape. The children grew up in Philadelphia and Richmond Virgina. Grover was released in 1946 but never recovered from his time in prision and he spent most of his later years under psychiatric supervision with Alfred as one of his guardians.

Erwin and Alfred had a shared interest in comics and underground art. They began collecting after the death of their father. They were skillful stock market investors and had money to spend. They bought from and corresponded with many of the important figures in underground comics in the 1970s and 1980s including Kim Deitch, Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Rory Hayes, Art Spiegelman and Aline Kominsky Crumb. They collected over 1,300 underground comics and zines, and over 1,000 pieces of original art, all of which were donated to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in 2017.

Alfred died in 1990. Erwin continued to collect and correspond with underground artists but not as actively through the 1990s and early 2000s. Erwin Bergdoll died in 2015.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of collected ephemera about and correspondence with, the underground artists whose work Erwin and Alfred Bergdoll collected. The correpondence mostly dates from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and it is notable how much of it is between Kim Deitch and the brothers. Other artists who feature significantly in the correspondence are Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Rory Hayes, Art Spiegelman and Aline Kominsky Crumb.

The collection also contains the many comics catalogs from the 1970s and 1980s that the brothers used in their collecting. There are also reviews, clippings, flyers and information from newspapers and galleries on mainly comics related topics but also on primitive and folk art.

The woodblocks they commissioned for their press, the 'Pray Curser Press' are here as are a collection of postcards by Drew Friedman and Kim Deitch published by Glenn Bray.
