 Biographical Note

Brad Anderson (Bradley Jay Anderson), was an American cartoonist and creator of the comic strip ‘Marmaduke’

He was born in Jamestown, New York on May 14, 1924, and graduated from Brocton Central High School in 1943. He was interested in aviation from an early age and while still at high school submitted his first cartoon aged 15 to ‘Flying Aces’ magazine. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1943-1946) and while in service drew cartoons for Navy publications. After the war he enrolled at Syracuse University on the G.I. Bill, intending to study industrial design but he graduated with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts in 1951 with a major in Advertising.

While at Syracuse, Anderson served as an editor and regularly published cartoons in the student magazine ‘The Syracusan’. During this time he also sold cartoons to popular magazines such as ‘Collier’s Weekly’ and the ‘Saturday Evening Post’ After graduation Anderson went to work for Ball & Grier, an advertising agency in Utica, New York, but left in 1953 to focus on his freelance magazine cartooning work.

Anderson started his career drawing single panel cartoons aimed at magazines but in 1954 he began two family oriented comic strips, ‘Grandpa’s Boy’ which he drew until 1966 and the one he is best known for, ‘Marmaduke,’ which he drew from 1954 until his death in 2015.

‘Marmaduke’ revolves around the Winslow family and their dog, a Great Dane called Marmaduke. Anderson’s mother’s Boxer and a Great Dane Anderson knew in Jamestown are sometimes cited as inspiration for the character. He said one of the reasons he settled on a Great Dane was “you couldn't see the eyes of my shaggy dogs, so as I thought more about it I decided I wanted a dog where I could have an expressive face" (Cartoonist Profiles, no. 56, Dec. 1982, p. 18-25). Anderson has also mentioned he drew on Laurel and Hardy routines for his ideas for the strip. He always illustrated the strips but sometimes had help from others with writing ideas, including early on, Phil and Dorothy Leeming, and later his son Paul. The Sunday ‘Marmaduke’ strips featured a popular side feature called ‘Dog Gone Funny’ where Anderson illustrated real life dog anecdotes submitted to him by readers.

‘Marmaduke’ was a winning formula and it remains one of the most well-known and longest running syndicated newspaper comic strips of all time. At its peak, the strip appeared in more than 600 newspapers in 20 countries worldwide.

Brad Anderson received numerous awards and recognitions for his work. In 1978, he received the Newspaper Panel Award from the National Cartoonists Society and in 2012, the NCS awarded him the Milton Caniff lifetime achievement award. Syracuse University awarded him the George Arents Pioneer Medal for alumni in 1999. Many Marmaduke book compilations appeared including a 50th anniversary compilation. Anderson was generous with his time and frequently visited schools and worked for and donated artwork to dog and animal charities.

'Marmaduke' was animated by Ruby Spears in 1980 for segments in the animated ‘Heathcliff’ show and a full length live action movie based on the strip, ‘Marmaduke’ appeared in 2010.

Anderson died in The Woodlands, Texas on August 30, 2015 at the age of 91.

 Scope and Contents

The Brad Anderson Collection contains Anderson's early workls such as childhood drawings and art completed as a student at Syracuse University. Much of the biographical information and creation of Marmaduke can be found in Series 2: Interviews, profiles and drawings. Also included are early cartoons strios, magazine cartions, and work done during his advertising career in the 1950s. Publications, including clippings, proofs, and tearsheets, in which his work appeared can also be found throughout the collection.

A significant portion of the collection is devoted to Anderson's work on Marmaduke, including information project files, sketches, roughs, notes and gag ideas, posters, books, and merchandise. Over 14,000 original Marmaduke comic strips can be found in the original art database, along with other art by Anderson, or owned by him. Also includes is correspondence with syndicates, publishers, and fan mail. Of particular interest, is Series 7 which documents Anderson's (and Marmaduke's) philathropic work and Series 8, appearance aschool visits document the many talks Anderson gave at schools and to community groups.
