            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Athur Dale Small was born January 8, 1886 in Bellaire, Ohio and later moved to St. Caliresville. His father died whe nhe was in third grade and he had to quit school in order to support his mother and younger siblings. He worked in the steel mills along the Ohio River. During his leisure time he was devoted to cartooning and took a correspondence course at the Cleveland School of Art. He was a freelance cartonnist who drawings and cartoons appeared in the Canton Repository and New Philadelphia Daily Times. He was also a skilled artists in pastels, chalk, landscapes, portraits, and other mediums. In the ealry 1940s he drew the original Massillon Tiger football mascot and painted the mascot on the marching band drums. He also drew tourists attractions in Ohio for the booklet, "See Ohio First." The booklet was used as business advertisements at Ohio Oil gas stations, banks, and published in newspapers. He began works at a sign company in Canton, Ohio and later founded the Dakin and Small Sign Company in Alliance, Ohio. He invented and patented an elctroplating process that allows complicated images to reproduced on stainless steel. This process is still used to make award and commemorative plaques. He later sold the process to Massillon Plaque in Ohio. In addition to cartooning, Small also cut gems as a hobby. He passed awat in Canton on August 2, 1958.</p>

            <p>The collection contains scrapbooks of cartoons by Arthur Dale Small published in various newspapers and the "See Ohio First" series. Also included are tearsheets of his cartoons, sketchbooks, examples of his work for advertisements, biographical materials, and artists tools.</p>
